Thousands of people in hundreds of cities around the word have been venting their fury against the greed of the big banks – and the debt management inflicted by their governments. In Rome, riot police used tear gas and water cannons, after violent protesters hijacked a peaceful demonstration, smashing bank windows and torching cars. Plumes of smoke were seen billowing near the Collisseum and other parts of the city. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Unfortunately this time last year I was made redundant.. I’ve managed to get temp jobs here + there to keep me kind of going. I now have a new job permanant job, with a steady income, and in less than 2 weeks time, am moving into my new home.. A home my friend has bought, but I’m renting the other room.

I’m sorting out consolidating the debt I aquired whilst unemployed.. Credit card, overdrafts, unpaid phone contracts, unpaid internet contract, unpaid Ebay bills.. The lot. It only totals less than 2K, so it’s not THAT bad. I HAVE to consolidate it, as it’s the only way to freeze the interest, as it’s now gone into default, which means I can no longer confer with the banks over a repayment plan. It’s pay it all bank now in one lump, or consolidate it thru a debt company.

Basically I owe 2 months rent on the house I’m moving out of.. Can this type of debt be added to the consolidation plan? It’s been passed to a debt collection agency, so I assume so? Or can they be mean, and take the unpaid rent out of the other tenants deposit?? I’m really worried!!

Need some debt advice.

The house is rented through an estate agents, not privately.

I had a bankruptcy, Chapter 7, that was discharged in Feb, 2006. Since then, I’ve managed to clean my credit up enough to buy a home (FHA) and get my FICO’s back into the low to mid 600s.

I HAVE to get out of the 100% commission job I’m in (doing mortgages), I’m making almost NOTHING. I already work for a bank, but not at a branch. I have an interview this week for a banking job, entry-level, and am concerned that having had the bankruptcy means I’m automatically a no-go for the job, no ifs, ands, or buts, or, I’ll have to work at McDonald’s or something to tide me over…does anyone know what most banks do in this situation?

I’ve heard that they do eliminate past bankrupt candidates, because, in thier mind, I’d be more likey to steal to get out of a bind…but think about it – who’s the bigger risk? A guy whose debts were discharged and is doing OK now, or the guy who didn’t file, but still has ,000 (or whatever) in credit card debt following him around?
OK – to the last poster, I do NOT have 80k in credit cards. I have about 40 dollars on them.

I was suggesting that had I not filed, I’d have 80k of bad debts with poor payment histories and that’s probably worse than a clean slate with a bankruptcy from a standpoint of who’s more likely to steal.
I want to go into banking as a natural extention of my experience. The only other jobs I’ve seen any response on are sales jobs that I really think would grow old and tiresome after a while – I’d prefer something I can "move up" in without having to start out at an hour

Sure they may seem like a good thing…eliminating late fees, not allowing a spike in interest rates for being late, increasing the minimum payment so the balance gets paid off quicker, but there are repercussions. This may help people who are irresponsible, take on more debt than they can handle, don’t read what they sign, don’t keep track of their finances, but to the people who do it the right way it will likely hurt them. Banks aren’t going to just sit back and allow their profits to be eaten away like this. Instead of late fees they will charge annual fees. Since they will be restricted when and whom they can raise interest rates on, they will just raise them on everybody for no reason before the law takes affect. Forcing customers to pay an increased minimum payment may be more than some can afford at the time and will drive them into bankruptcy (how ironic that will be) Maybe they can only afford to pay a month until they get out of college and get a better job, then they can pay it down more. Who knows what each individual person’s situation is, certainly not a mickey mouse bureaucrat in Washington. I remember about 4 years ago when some financial regulatory agency in Washington was just RECOMMENDING that credit card companies increase their minimum payment requirements and people countered by saying, oh well this is only a recommendation, and I told them sooner rather than later the day would come when it would be mandated and what do you know, it happened. Also, it will be harder to get a card in the first place. I say if adults are irresponsible enough to take on more debt than they can afford and businesses are dumb enough to lend it to them, let them both go down and let them live and learn and leave the government out of it, but I guess this is what people wanted they checked that little box that said "Obama" 11 months ago. A liberal is what you voted for and a liberal is what you got. A do-gooder, and yes I do mean that in a negative way. You say why doing "good" isn’t always so nice. Sure, I read that part in the law that says this new law is "optional" The problem is, if I choose not to follow the government rules, I have to close my account altogether and not have a card at all and all future card holders don’t have a choice and have to play by the government’s new rules.
