If you’re from the US and you move to say, Europe and you don’t plan on coming back to the US for at least 10 years or more? A friend of mine is moving out of the country and she’s settling her affairs here and it got me wondering what would happen if she just left her credit cards unpaid. What do creditors do in that scenario? It’s just out of my own curiosity…

Hi, yesterday I found out that a registered letter was delivered to my Mom’s house, I’m currently living in Europe so she picked it up at the post office for me. Apparently it is a court summons for 00 of debt, my card was through Citibank. I thought that I had already taken care of this bill, but unfortunately, I didn’t so I was shocked to hear about this. There is no date, or docket number on the letter. My Mom is going to call the lawyer’s office for me tomorrow and try to get a settlement, I have the full amount ready to be paid if they won’t settle for anything less. If I’m willing to give them the 00 will they say no and still take me to court? It was shocking to me because I haven’t received anything in the mail about this debt for months. I think that they’re trying to scare me into paying (it’s working) but it’s not like I don’t want to pay it off either, as I thought it had already been taken care of. I just hope that they will accept the money and be done with it, then I’m finally debt free! Going to court is really not ideal since I would have to fly back to Ohio and take leave from my job here. Also, since it was a registered letter addressed to me, would my Mom even be able to pick up a legit court summons because I thought that I would have to pick it up in person? Thanks.
Thank you all for your advice. GREAT news, my Mom called the lawyer today and they gave me a ,350 settlement and dropped the case. :) I’m officially 100% debt free, and I ain’t never goin back!!

I suppose I am a little naive when it comes to how this credit thing runs as I moved away from the U.S. to Europe when I turned 18. I have never opened any kind of account, whether it be credit cards or bank accounts, etc. I never changed my surname from my maiden name to my married name with the credit agencies.
I now have strong reasons to believe that someone in my family in the U.S. is using my maiden name to open accounts. I need to access my free annual credit report but, I don’t know how to do that. I can’t even go to the credit report site as it does not allow access for people outside the U.S.! I can’t print out the application as the address space is only for U.S. addresses.
So, what do I do now?
If anyone has any suggestions then that would be great!
I can’t pay for them online because I do not have a credit card.
Daman..as much as it makes me sound like a stupid person, I didn’t even know what credit was or that credit reports existed until my sister told me about it. I had really no reason to know. I went from being a high school student to a housewife and my husband (who is not American) handles all our finances here. Like I said, I am pretty naive when it comes to this. I’m trying to get everything sorted now.
    P.S. you can’t call 1-800 numbers outside the U.S.

I am an American citizen living in Europe. I’ve been to the website to order my free credit report but it always tells me that I must be in the US to do it. Am I going to have to wait until I visit to do it, or what?

I currently owe ,000 in student loans and I am having a hard time paying them off. The loans are private (sallie mae) and I am not elligible for consolidating them via federal loans since I am not a US citizen. I was not able to get a visa so I had to leave the US. I live in Europe now.

I understand that declaring bankruptcy would not cancel out the student loans, but I have read that bankruptcy could cancel out credit card debt. I have a good credit score (790), so given some time, with an even higher credit score, I may be able to transfer my loans to a few credit cards.

What are the laws regarding credit card debt and bankruptcy? What difference does it make that I am not a US citizen and do not live in the US?
