I have about 60000 in unsecured credit card debt…i recently was enrolled in a settlement program where the company was not able to settle my debts for the amount i was told…what other options do i have now? should i talk to careone credit or freedom debt relief? i am trying to avaoid bankruptcy as much as possible
i am in the US…my debts are now with collectors and have been for a while…i am afraid of being sued…should i call the collection agencies myself…they have offered settlements but not sure how they will workt he payments…do they need that all right away
also, what about the statue of limitations? i am in PA and i havent made a payment on thsi debt on over 4 years…do i still have to pay it?
with the statue of limitations, if i made payments to a settlement company, but those payments never went to my bablance, just the fees to the company, would it still apply to the statue of limitations?

I was thinking of signing up with a debt settlement company but I have heard the debt settlement companies not what they seem. They promise to settle your credit card and unsecured debt for half or less than what you owe. I have heard what they don’t tell you is that you usually get sued, get your wages garnished, and that the debt settlement companies over report what they actually save you while charging you a huge fee. In addition, I have heard that your savings are reported to the IRS as income and that your credit report is trashed. Supposedly their seemingly caring sales people are paid high commissions. Apparently you can negotiate with your creditors and be just as successful while saving the thousands of dollars these companies charge you. What I want to know is if all that is really true about these companies and can I actually negotiate with my creditors myself and save thousands in fees. I need the scoop from someone that is honest and knows the truth about these companies

I’m not talking about debt consolidation or credit counseling. I have over ,000 in credit card debt at relatively low single digit interest rates for the most part. I got into this mess from being unemployed twice for a total of about a year and a half a few years ago. I am now employed again at a good job, but I will never get out of this debt as is. My credit score is currently about 700, but I am more than maxed out in terms of debt relative to income. I don’t own a home and never have, but I will never be able to afford one with the credit card debt I have.
I had zero credit card debt before I became unemployed the first time. I also have ,000 in student loans to pay off.
I don’t know, I might qualify as non-human. I have a budget and stick to it mostly, and I was always good with money before those stints of unemployment. Right now my minimum payments are just so high that I can’t make ends meet, and can’t pay off any extra. I can’t buckle down and spend any less than I already am. I am already fully buckled down.
It sounds like my best option might just to be to stop making payments and let my credit score get trashed, and then try to settle up. I was thinking it would be better to work with a debt settlement company than try to do it all myself. But maybe not.

Me and my husband owes 19K from Chase New York. We are really having a very bad situation coz im pregnant and we have a 6 year old son. I have no job and my husband’s work gives no overtime at all.. Last month, we signed up with a debt settlement company called Freedom Fidelity management. Its a mistake that we didnt look at BBB first, coz that said company has an F rating. and at the same time., the Chase company is sending us letters about them offering settlement.. So, we asked what there offer is., it turned out that we have to pay 90% of the money that we owe in 4 months, which is ridiculous, coz we have no money at all.. We’re living paycheck to paycheck.,Chase is our only credit card.. we ripped the card so we will stop using it.. We are aware that we are responsible for our debts of course., but i cannot believe that Chase is acting like theyre offering some kinda settlement which for us is not helpful at all… 90% of 19K is too much.. so we have no choice now but to find a legit debt settlement companies.. I really hope that you can help me or give me an advice here.. Thank you so much!

I am referring to companies like InCharge Debt Solutions (http://www.incharge.org/)

When they contact your credit card company they enroll your account into a DMP status and the accounts get closed. I am just curious what effects this has on your credit assuming that you had good credit and have not missed payments etc but are looking to lower the interest rates and pay the cards off.
Thank you E-Rock. I was told by a debt settlement company that DPMs are looked at by loaners the same as if it was a bankruptcy.

Thank you for clearing this up, and as far as the first person who replied, I specifically said DPM not a settlement, did you even read my question?

I have over 10,000 worth of credit card debt and a personal loan of 2600 with Beneficial. I am thinking about consolidating it and wondering if anyone has had success with this. I did not want to get a loan but rather do a consolidation with a company that will lower my interest rates and monthly payments. I have so many cards and really think it will help to have just one payment.
Can someone recommend a company to me and tell me why they have worked for you–NO SETTLEMENT COMPANY’S–I know these are bad news and I don’t want my credit ruined.

          Thanks

I have a good amount of debt from College, and an ex that dumped a bunch of bills on me. I have a great paying job now, but got suckered into a debt settlement company that basically ruined my credit and stole my money and did nothing to help with my debt but just ruined it. I am looking for a debt consolidation service that I can use to pay off my debt. I have a great paying job and have been good with paying off other bills/car/cards in the past, I have just fallen behind on a couple of things and really need it sorted out.
